Mountain Pointe boys stay perfect, win Horizon Invitational

December 17, 2011 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Mountain Pointe endured one bad stretch in Saturday night's final of the Horizon Invitational boys basketball tournament, but all it cost the Pride was the lead for a few seconds. The good thing was that stretch took place in the third period.

Mountain Pointe saw its 32-21 halftime lead melt in the third to a one-point deficit, but the Pride bounced back in the third and returned to form in the fourth in notching a 70-53 win over Horizon.

Mountain Pointe improved to 8-0 on the season. The Pride got a game-high 20 points from tournament most valuable player Khari Holloway. Holloway scored eight of his points in the final period. Three of Holloway's teammates also scored in double figures -- Jordan Bellamy (13) and Jalen Brown and Austin Witherill (11 apiece). Witherill sank three 3-pointers, all in the second half. Brown was also chosen to the all-tournament team.

Horizon was led by Eric Lewis with 13 points and Kye de Laveaga with 11. Lewis and de Laveaga were also selected to the all-tournament team. Both schools continue play after Christmas in the Challenge at Mesa Mountain View High School.
