Growing list of athletes who won championships as a player and as a head coach

Here is a short list of athletes who won a state championship as a player at an AIA high school and then went on to win a state title as a head coach at an AIA program. If you know of anyone else then please add on social media. It’s important to note "HEAD" coach.

 

Rich Alday led Tucson High to a football championship in 1965 as a quarterback and he coached Ironwood Ridge to softball championships in 2014 and 2016.

 

Eric Tatham played second base on the 1987 Tucson High baseball championship team and he coached Cienega to softball titles in 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2018.

 

Kelly Pierce was a defender of Salpointe’s soccer championships of 1998 and 1999 and she coached the Lancers to soccer titles in 2018 and 2019.

 

Andy Fetsis was part of Sabino’s 1990 state championship football team and he coached Pusch Ridge tennis to state titles in 2017, 2018 and 2019 for girls and 2018 for boys.

 

Stacy Iveson won a state championship playing volleyball for Catalina in 1983 and she coached Salpointe to a softball title in 1993.

 

Amy Rocha won two softball titles with Salpointe in 1993 and 1996 and she coached the Lancers to softball titles in 2018 and 2019.

 

Heather Moore-Martin played on Catalina’s 1983 volleyball state championship team and she coached the Catalina boys to volleyball titles in 2010 and 2011 and the Salpointe girls to volleyball championships in 2016 and 2017.

PJ Ponce won individual wrestling championships in 1987 and 1988 for San Manuel and he coached Mountain View Marana to a team title in 2017.
